Land transportation (and therefore an indispensable element of maritime transport) in India is somewhat different from, for example, in China. Factories are often located far from seaports, and the road infrastructure (due to very low road quality) does not favor container transportation. This situation forces freight forwarders to organize deliveries between manufacturers’ factories and seaports – using railway routes based on so-called dry ports (ICD). These are terminals where containers can be picked up and dropped off. Since not all carriers operate at the mentioned ICDs, a low freight rate on FOB terms can turn out to be very costly. If it turns out that the nearest place where the carrier’s empty containers are available is 400 KM away from the manufacturer’s warehouse, the local costs incurred by the shipper are higher by several hundred dollars, which ultimately the importer will still pay in the commercial invoice…
