Chengdu – 成都
Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan Province in southwest China. This impressive metropolis (over 15 million inhabitants) is famous for its varied and spicy cuisine.
Sichuan has a very stuffy and humid climate, which has had a significant impact on the cuisine of this region. Spicy food was supposed to restore balance by balancing the moisture in the body. Sichuan pepper, which makes the tongue feel numb, is the basis of most dishes in this area of China.
Characteristic for Chengdu is also the panda, whose symbols adorn the city. It houses the most popular Research and Breeding Center of the Giant Panda, which until recently fought for the survival of this species. Interestingly, pandas spend 16 hours a day eating (mostly bamboo shoots) – many of us would envy such a lifestyle.
Chengdu is also the capital of printing. In this city, as the first in the world, paper banknotes were introduced.
