Real Logistics obtains permit for food storage: A decisive step forward and new opportunities for clients

In February 2024, we obtained permission for the handling and storage of foodstuffs in bulk packaging that do not require refrigeration conditions, issued by the State Sanitary Inspection. This permission is significant for companies in the food industry and related sectors. It guarantees legal handling and storage of food products, such as mixers, blenders, cutlery, bowls, and plates, as well as dry food products, grains, pasta, or canned goods that do not require special storage conditions such as cooling. It covers the Real Logistics warehouse at 21 Kontenerowa Street in Gdańsk and brings many superlatives.

The sanitary procedure was long and required enormous commitment, but it was worth it. In this article, we want to outline the details of the permit application process and the new range of benefits it brings to our clientele.

Sanitary challenge: the path to obtaining storage permit

Obtaining a permit from the Sanitary Inspectorate for food storage is a crucial challenge for entrepreneurs, requiring compliance with strict sanitary and hygiene standards and adaptation of warehouse infrastructure. The sanitary procedure includes, among other things, developing an HACCP plan, ensuring proper storage conditions, and adhering to standards regarding protection against insects and pests. Although this requires significant financial and logistical investment, obtaining the permit has proven to be essential for us to ensure the high quality and safety of food products and to build trust with customers.

Behind the scenes of obtaining the Sanitary Inspectorate’s permit for storage in our company

“It took a lot of time to arrange,” emphasizes Adam Trzciński, 3PL/Project Manager. “We began the process in October, and we received the final decision at the end of February,” he explains. This required several steps, including writing a book of good practices and adjusting the warehouse. “We need to, among other things, place markings and stick hand washing instructions near the sinks,” he adds. Additionally, it was necessary to designate a place for storing food and damaged products, conduct water tests, and sign a contract with a DDD company. “Furthermore, we maintain a sanitary control logbook and obtain necessary equipment, such as thermometers and hygrometers,” Trzciński summarizes.

Trust under scrutiny – challenges related to maintaining the permit

Obtaining a permit for food storage is just the beginning of challenges not only for us at Real Logistics but also for other companies operating in the food industry. Maintaining this permit requires constant attention, diligent work, and continuous adaptation to strict food safety standards.

One of the key challenges is maintaining the highest hygiene standards at all times. It’s essential to be prepared for regularly conducted sanitary inspections, checking whether warehouses and their surroundings are clean and free from pests and whether proper storage conditions are maintained. Therefore, companies must invest in cleanliness maintenance systems and conduct regular inspections to ensure that all food storage requirements are met.

An important issue, emphasized by Adam Trzciński, is regular temperature checking. “The thermometer and hygrometer readings should be recorded twice a day,” he notes. This is crucial for maintaining proper storage conditions for food products. “The list of results is checked in case of any Sanitary Inspectorate inspections,” Trzciński adds. This is in line with sanitary and hygiene requirements that impose the obligation of regular monitoring of warehouse conditions to ensure the safety and quality of stored food.

Another challenge is the meticulous management of expiration dates and stock rotation. Improper labeling or monitoring of dates can lead to illegal sales of products, resulting in loss of customer trust and sanctions from regulatory authorities.

Furthermore, maintaining a permit for food storage requires continuous monitoring of changes in regulations and adapting to sanitary procedures. The food industry is dynamic, and sanitary regulations are often updated, requiring ongoing staff education and updating of procedures and systems in line with new requirements.

What benefits does the permit for goods storage bring to our clients?

Having a permit for goods storage translates into safe and fresh storage of products, ensuring customers that their purchases are safe. Properly conducted sanitary procedures give the green light for expanding the assortment and flexible adaptation to customer needs, as well as smoother order fulfillment, which affects their satisfaction. Such a permit builds trust among customers, which is crucial for building long-term business relationships and acquiring new clients.

Range of warehousing possibilities – benefits of having the permit for sanitary-controlled goods storage

The Sanitary Inspectorate permit for goods storage can be a key element in expanding warehousing possibilities for businesses. Above all, it allows for legal warehouse operations under strict sanitary regulations, which affects customer trust and enables business growth.

Having a Sanitary Inspectorate permit opens the doors to a wider range of short-shelf-life products for our company. Many companies may be limited in storing certain food products without proper Sanitary Inspectorate approval. Holding this permit allows us to store various products, thereby enabling businesses to flexibly adapt to changing market and customer needs.

Moreover, a Sanitary Inspectorate permit can also enhance the company’s image as a reliable and professional business partner. Customers usually have greater trust in companies that adhere to strict sanitary standards and possess necessary approvals. Therefore, having a Sanitary Inspectorate permit seems to us as a significant asset in acquiring new customers and building long-lasting business relationships.

What goods are covered by the food storage permit?

The permit authorizes our company to engage in handling and storing foodstuffs in bulk packaging that do not require refrigeration, making it a key document for companies operating in the food industry. It is a formal authorization allowing for the legal conduct of activities related to the manipulation and storage of specified goods.

It is worth noting that this permit does not cover all food products but focuses on the category of foodstuffs placed in bulk packaging. This means that with this permission, we can handle, among other things, the storage of products for food processing, such as the household appliances mentioned earlier and dry food products.

For entrepreneurs operating in the food sector, having this type of permit becomes not only a formal but also a strategic matter. It enables flexible management of food warehouses and efficient handling of handling processes, which is crucial for the effective functioning of the enterprise. At the same time, it demonstrates compliance with legal regulations and cares for the quality of stored goods, which can translate into trust from customers and business partners.

Goods storage – definition, essence, and its significance in business

Goods storage plays a crucial role in today’s global supply chain, forming the foundation of effective inventory management and logistics. Defined as the process of storing products in appropriate conditions, storage ensures supply continuity, minimizes the risk of damage, and enables optimal use of warehouse space. The essence of storage lies not only in providing physical space for goods but also in skillfully managing them, preventing excess inventory, and efficiently utilizing them in the distribution process. In the context of business, goods storage is a key element of operational strategy, directly impacting the competitiveness of the enterprise through cost control, increased efficiency, and improved customer service.

When it comes to storage, it’s worth noting that each type of goods is governed by its own distinct rules. Some require more rigorous storage conditions, while others require less. Focusing on those that are more demanding, these are often hazardous goods, but it’s not uncommon for stored food to also require a significant amount of restrictions to maintain optimal condition from the manufacturer to the store.

Food storage – characterization of the service

Food storage is a key element in the supply chain of food products, characterized by a range of unique requirements and specifics. Firstly, food storage must adhere to the highest standards of hygiene and food safety to prevent contamination and spoilage of products. This entails maintaining appropriate temperature, humidity, and cleanliness throughout the storage process.

Moreover, food storage often requires the use of specialized technologies and equipment such as refrigerators, freezers, or vacuum pumps to ensure proper storage conditions for different types of food products. It is also important to meticulously manage expiration dates and stock rotation to avoid waste and maintain product freshness.

Food storage is also characterized by the need to comply with strict food safety regulations and regulations, which are strictly enforced by sanitary and epidemiological authorities. Therefore, companies involved in food storage must be properly approved by sanitary authorities and comply with specific sanitary regulations to legally conduct their operations.

Finally, food storage also requires rapid response to changing market conditions and customer demand, often involving a flexible approach to inventory management and adaptation to new trends and consumer requirements.

Permit for goods storage under sanitary control – what is it and what requirements must be met to obtain it?

In the light of Regulation (EC) No 178/2002 of the European Parliament and the Council, food includes all substances or products that can be consumed by humans, whether they are processed, partially processed, or unprocessed. This fundamental concept delineates the scope of activities regulated by laws and standards regarding the storage and trade of food products.

Premises designated for food storage play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and quality of stored products. Their proper adaptation to the specifics of the stored goods, including the need to adjust storage conditions for certain products, is essential for maintaining the integrity and freshness of food products.

Owners and managers of food warehouses are required to operate following current standards and guidelines, including in-house HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) systems, the Food Safety and Nutrition Act, and the Good Hygienic Practice Principles (GHP). These documents form the basis of actions aimed at ensuring appropriate storage conditions and minimizing the risk of contamination or degradation of product quality. All are under sanitary requirements.

Basic food storage conditions include a range of issues such as providing protection against pests, monitoring temperature and humidity, maintaining the cleanliness of premises, and appropriately marking and illuminating shelves and sectors with food products. It is also important to use suitable containers or packaging to prevent damage or contamination of goods. Compliance with sanitary handwashing instructions is also crucial to prevent contamination of stored food by employees. These actions are essential for ensuring the safety and quality of stored food and compliance with applicable sanitary regulations.
